Residents approached Jet Coast Development
Trust during 2008, to see if we were interested in developing
an archaeological project to try and locate the site of the
Anglo Saxon Seton Church, in a field midway between Staithes
and Hinderwell.
The supposed site is marked on mid 19th century maps but
has never been investigated or recorded properly. Three stone
coffins and bones were discovered in the 1840’s. One
of the coffins is supposedly still being used as a cattle
trough in a nearby field. |
.
We realised that this could be the start of a much bigger
project which could also include the six other parishes
in the Mulgrave Ward, (Aislaby, Newholm-cum-Dunsley,
Lythe, Ugthorpe, Mickleby and Roxby) and covering a
much wider range of topics - Oral History, Family History,
Archaeology, Geology, Art & Culture, Buildings and
their History, Old & New Industries, Churches &
Religion, Social & Economic History, Wild Life Surveys,
or Creating Modern Day Records in Film or Photography.
To launch the project, and to find out the level of
interest from residents, local groups or people already
undertaking research of their own, the project was launched
at an event in Hinderwell Village Hall in September
2008.
Over 120 people attended, who were particularly interested
in the displays of old railway photos, old postcards,
maps, local film footage and Family History.
This will be a new and exiting way to bring people
together from different villages in the area, provide
an opportunity for people to gain new skills and knowledge
and will create a sense of pride and renewed interest
in the community as a whole, as well as enhance community
cohesion.
